Britannia
Nathan. Zda bude Británie i na Euro mincích není ještě rozhodnuto.

"For more than 600 years
gold coins have been part of the British currency, enjoying a popularity
which has seen them circulate far beyond the shores of Britain. This long
history has seen gold nobles, angels, crowns, unites and guineas
sovereigns come and go but in the midst of all the political and economic
changes throughout the centuries, a gold coinage has largely been retained.
The most recent addition came in 1987 with the introduction of a new gold
coin grounded in the traditions of great designs, quality of manufacture,
integrity and dignity. Deliberately conceived to compete in the gold
markets of the modern world, it was given a face value of £100, making it
the highest denomination coin of the realm, and contained a full ounce of
fine gold. Its companion pieces, coins of £50, £25 and £10, contained a
half-ounce, a quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce of gold respectively and,
since all four were to be immediately recognisable as British, they each
bore the famous figure from which the coins have taken their name –
Britannia.
For the new gold coins of 1987 Philip Nathan submitted
several designs as possibilities for the reverses including one which he
felt appropriately linked Britannia with Boudicca, the beautiful warrior
queen who inspired her people to rise up against their harsh Roman rulers.
He was asked to adapt this particular design for the coins of 1997, the
10th Anniversary of the introduction of the gold Britannia coins and the
only time it has previously featured on the gold Britannia family. A
dynamic portrayal of Britannia which emphasises her strength and long
association with the sea, it features the majestic figure of Britannia
standing proud in her horse-drawn chariot as she races along the seashore.
Philip Nathan’s Boudicca-like Britannia has been chosen for the Britannia
family of 2009 and, like the coins of 1997, Britannia’s portrait is framed
with the ornate romanesque-style crenellated border peculiar to Britannia
coins. "
